CASCIANA TERME

This thermal resort is situated south of Pontedera on the slopes of a hill covered with olive groves and vineyards. Its curative waters have been known since Roman times but the first thermal establishment was built in 1311 by the ruler of Pisa, Count Federico da Montefeltro. Its present fame is largely due to the interest that the Grand dukes of Tuscany took in it, and it was they who rebuilt and enlarged the spa in the eighteenth century. The present modern complex was built in 1968. The waters in Casciana are rich in mineral salts and bubble to the surface at a temperature of 36°C. They are particularly indicated for the treatment of disorders of the respiratory system, circulation problems and digestive ailments.
