| Hotel San Lino, situated within the medieval wall of Volterra, was originally built as a convent in 1480 and remained as such until 1982 when it became an hotel. The building maintains a certain mystic aspect of its original "life" thanks to specialized renovations which have helped to enhance its historic charm whilst introducing necessary modern day comforts. From the rooms facing the Via San Lino guests can view one of the most suggestive medieval streets of Volterra, through which pass, the processions for local historical events and the much acclaimed "Flag Throwers" of Volterra.
The rooms which face the internal side of the hotel allow guests to enjoy the view of the small garden, where the dominating colours are the blue of the swimming pool and the multi coloured rays of the stained glass window belonging to the tiny church of San Lino.
Thanks to it central but quiet location, Hotel San Lino is the ideal place for all who wish to experience the tranquillity of an age gone by or for those who wish to discover the architectural and natural beauty of one of the most ancient cities in Italy.

Volterra is one of the very few art cities in Italy that boasts more than three thousand years of history. A single ticket gives access to three very interesting museums which are open every day of the year.
The Art Gallery. Since 1982 the Art Gallery has been housed in the Palazzo Minucci-Solaini, a splendid example of late 15th century architecture. A part of this small but choice collection includes the remarkable painting of The Deposition by Rosso Fiorentino, The Polyptychs by Taddeo di Bartolo, The Pietà of Francesco Neri da Volterra, The Annunciation and Holy Conversation by Luca Signorelli and an interesting display of Medieval sculptures, ceramics and coins.
The Guarnacci Etruscan Museum. The collection is mostly Etruscan but there is also an interesting prehistoric and Roman section. The museum houses more than 600 cinerary urns in alabaster, tufa and terracotta, a rich collection of coins, ceramics, jewellery, sculptures, utensils, icons and bronze figures.
The Museum of Sacred Art. The paintings, sculptures, vestments and ecclesiatical items on display have been collected from the cathedral and the churches of the diocese. |

Hotel San Lino is situated just a few metres inside the medieval door bearing the name of "San Francesco", which faces the Provincial highway. The hotel therefore, is extremely easy to reach from all directions: from Pisa, from Siena or from the coast.
Owing to Volterra's strategic geographical position, the distances which separate it from the major centres of Tuscany are extremely balanced. |
